In the reviews I read of Desert Cabal the book was pitched as a smack down of Edward Abbey. And while in some ways it is, it is so much more than that. And yes, there is a lot to dislike about beloved Edward Abbey. Abbey’s writing is rich in misogyny, xenophobia, and a completely white male-centric view of solitude and the achingly beautiful lands of the West. Whose land?!? If you don’t remember it that way, go ahead and give some of his stuff a reread and see what you think.
Nonetheless, while Irvine’s Cabal does give Abbey “what for” as she sits beside his grave, this little book is so much more. It really is just under 100 pages of beautiful and evocative poetry! Technically it is written as prose, but it reads as powerful poetry through and through. Irvine’s ability to elicit vivid imagery is exquisite. And while the informed reader will be familiar with the environmental and social issues she raises, it is worth it to read it in Irvine’s powerful words. I believe Irvine meant this to be a call to action, but to me it read as more of a eulogy for our planet. Note this is my own biases and projections, don’t let this stop you from reading Desert Cabal! It really is powerful and motivating writing! I highly recommend you check it out!
